How to Travel Extravagantly on the Cheap
My wife and I are just making the long journey back to the States from a dream 10 year anniversary trip to the Seychelles — a 115 island country / archipelago in the middle of the Indian Ocean, east of Africa.
Sound surreal? It definitely was.
When many people hear of places like the Maldives, Zanzibar, Seychelles, and Bora Bora…they automatically think these places are out of reach. But the truth is that with some careful planning and diligence, you can make the trip of your dreams a reality.
Over the years, I’ve traveled a variety of ways, including backpacking on a $40/day budget and business travel on a seemingly unlimited budget. This post is about my experiences traveling on my own dime, in “exclusive” island destinations.
Tip #1 — Know what you’re getting yourself into. Many of these destinations have what I call “resort islands.” Basically, you take a sea plane or ferry and are held captive on the island until departure. Granted, there are far worse places to be held captive, but don’t expect to save any dough if you’re going down this route. Kudos to you if you can swing it!
Tip #2 — Pick a hotel/resort that fits your budget. This is related to the point above, but many of these island destinations have a wide range of accommodations. You’ll find $25/night…
